Paul Ehrlich vs. Julian Simon: the famous overpopulation debate that changed how we think about resources, scarcity, and humanity's future. Starting in the 1970s and continuing into the 2000s, Paul Ehrlich confidently and repeatedly predicted mass starvation, resource depletion, and societal collapse from overpopulation. Not one of those dire predictions panned out. Then he lost the most famous bet in economics history when Julian Simon challenged him to put his money where his mouth was. So why did Ehrlich’s ideas become so influential?
